Business and information technology department's big data certificates ranked second in nation
Missouri S&T’s Business Analytics and Data Science graduate certification program is ranked second in the nation in Value College’s Top 50 Best Value Online Big Data Graduate Programs of 2016.
The rankings list Carnegie Mellon University first, followed by Missouri S&T, which also offers graduate certificate programs in Big Data and Security, and Big Data Management and Analytics. The programs are offered as part of distance and continuing education through Missouri S&T’s business information and technology department.
“These rankings show the value that Missouri S&T’s graduate certificate programs provide for our students,” says Dr. Keng Siau, chair of business and information technology at Missouri S&T. “Certificate holders are well positioned to take the next step in their education by transitioning into master’s degree programs that can further enrich their knowledge and skill sets, and enhance their career and professional development.”
Value College uses three metrics in its rankings: PayScale entry level salary; U.S. News & World Report rankings; and tuition as reported by the colleges.
“Now is the time to pursue a career in Big Data,” according to Value College. “Whatever you call it — data analytics, business analytics and business intelligence are just a few of the names — Big Data is the next wave of technology. More information is being recorded today than ever in history, between business, government, healthcare and education, and while computers do the heavy lifting, it still takes highly skilled, rigorously trained human beings to program those computers, run the numbers, analyze outputs and visualize and communicate the information. And there are not nearly enough people to do that work, meaning a major labor shortage and a prime opportunity to get into an in-demand profession.”
The Value College list follows the 2016 U.S. News & World Report ranking of Missouri S&T’s online graduate programs in the computer information technology category as tied for eighth overall and fifth among public universities. S&T offers online graduate degrees in computer science and information science and technology.
